The Aswan High Dam is one of the most important landmarks of modern Egypt in Aswan. Its aim is the protection for Egypt from floods and providing it with water and electricity.
After the revolution of July 1952, President Gamal Abdel Nasser announced the construction of the High Dam in Aswan.
The work in the construction of the High Dam began on 9 January 1960 and was inaugurated in 1971. It is 111 meters high, 3.5 km long, and 1 km wide. It has 6 turbines to generate electric power, producing 2.1 kilowatts.
As a result of the construction of the High Dam, Lake Nasser was formed. It is considered the largest artificial lake in the world. Its length is 500 km while its width is 10 km. Lake Nasser is exploited to produce a large amount of fish.
During the construction of the High Dam, the Nubian temples were almost exposed to sinking, but the Egyptian government with the help of UNESCO rescued them.
