Aswan Botanical Garden is one of the most important tourists sightseeing in Aswan. It is an attraction for both tourists and the people of Aswan themselves for relaxing and enjoying the tranquility and the fabulous landscape, as the garden contains many birds and rare plants.
The botanical garden is located on Kitchener Island. Kitchener Island is one of the islands of Aswan. It is located to the west of Elephantine Island. This island takes an oval shape.
This garden can be reached by boats or public ferries that extend between Aswan, Elephantine Island, and Kitchener Island. These transportations provide an opportunity to watch the beautiful views of the Aswan Nile, especially the sunset view.
Kitchener Island has 3 entrances. The best one is the main entrance, which is located at the northern side of the island because it allows seeing the entire island without walking much.
Why is the island called Kitchener Island?
In 1899, Lord Horatio Kitchener made the island the headquarters of his campaign. the Lord was passionate about trees and plants, so he turned the island into an amazing botanical garden.
In 1928, the Egyptian government regained the island, it was preserved as a botanical garden.King Fouad I named it King Island,then after the July 23 revolution, President Gamal Abdel Nasser called it Botanical Island,and The Nubians called this island Jet Narty.
Botanical Garden Design:
The garden looks like a chessboard, as it is divided into 27 squares that intersect each other.the garden covers an area of 18 acres , is 700 meters long, and 115 meters wide.
The garden includes plants imported from eastern India and Africa. It is filled with rare plants and has a variety of trees. a number of rare palm trees can be found such as the Royal Palm tree, the Sabal Palm tree, and the Phonic Pam tree.so, a large number of birds live on the island.
