Who is Aga Khan?
He is Mohammed Shah Aga Khan. He was born in India and learned in Europe. He was one of the richest men in the world at that time. He became the 48th Imam of the Ismailis sect in 1885 after his father.
Aga Khan came to Egypt in 1954 with his wife Begum Om Habiba because he was suffering from rheumatic pain. Doctors advised him to go to Aswan because its warm weather would help in relieving his pain. The elders in Aswan advised him to bury his body in the sands of Aswan t to be recovered from his pain. Indeed, he was cured.
Then Aga Khan decided to build a palace for housing in Aswan. This palace overlooks the Nile River. It was designed and executed by the architect of Islamic architecture, Farid Shafi’e. Then Aga Khan built this Mausoleum for him to be buried there after his death. His wife used to put a red rose for him every morning in his mausoleum until she was buried beside him after her death.
Mausoleum Design:
Aga Khan Mausoleum was designed in the style of Fatimid tombs. This mausoleum is built of pink limestone. It has a large central dome and four small side domes.
The mausoleum is covered from the inside with white marble, decorated with Quranic verses, and there is a mihrab located under the central dome.
