The unfinished obelisk is located in the granite quarry in 阿斯旺. Now the Egyptian government has announced the place as an open museum.
This obelisk dates back to the reign of Queen Hatshepsut, the 18th dynasty. If it had been completed, it would have become the largest obelisk in Egypt, as it would have reached a height of 42 meters and a weight of 1100 tons. But unfortunately, the work on this obelisk stopped because cracks appeared in the body of the obelisk.
This obelisk is credited with knowing the techniques of building obelisks in ancient Egypt, as the wooden slabs are soaked in water to expand it for creating cracks in the granite that enable them to cut the obelisk.
The obelisk was of great importance in ancient Egypt because it stood in front of the temples as a sign for the entrances to the temple. It was a symbol of the god Ra, the sun god.
During the New Kingdom, many obelisks were built, but most of them were moved outside Egypt, Such as the obelisk of King Thutmose III in Turkey. and the obelisk of King Ramses II in Paris. and only a few of them remained in Egypt. Such as the obelisk of Ramses II in the 卢克索神庙, and the obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut in the Karnak complex .
