The Nubian Museum is one of the most important museums in Egypt. Also, it is known as the International Museum of Nubia. It is located in the city of Aswan. The Nubian Museum was opened on November 23, 1997, with cost 75 million Egyptian pounds.
The history of the Nubian Museum:
UNESCO built the Nubian Museum during their international campaign in Aswan to save the monuments of Nubia, such as 阿布辛贝神庙 和 菲莱神庙 from drowning after the construction of 高坝 in the sixties.
The construction of this museum was part of the UNESCO project to establish a museum in Aswan and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Cairo. The museum was awarded the Aga Khan Award as the most beautiful architectural building in the world in 2001.
The design of this museum:
The museum was designed by the Egyptian engineer Mahmoud El-Hakim, while the museum exhibitions were designed by the Mexican Pedro Ramirez Varques.
The architectural desgin of this museum is similar to the traditional architecture in Nubia and the museum is built of sandstone and pink granite.
The area of the museum is 50,000 square meters, as 7,000 square meters is for the museum building, while the rest area is devoted to gardens and public places surrounding the museum. The museum includes a beautiful garden with many beautiful and rare plants and includes a theater to present the famous Nubian dances.
The museum consists of 3 floors:
The first floor is the basement which includes workshops and restoration laboratories.
The second floor is the exhibition hall.
The third floor houses the library and offices of the museum’s staff.
The Nubian Museum display:
The museum is dedicated to displaying the development of Nubian culture and civilization, the land of gold as it was named in the ancient Egyptian language.
The museum includes 3000 archaeological pieces that exhibit Egyptian history from prehistoric times to the Islamic periods, as well as objects displaying the Nubian and Aswan heritage.
Some masterpieces in this museum are a skeleton dating back to the prehistoric period, jewelry and crowns made of silver, and an exhibition that compensates for the customs and traditions of the Nubian community.
