Pompey Pillar is one of the most famous tourist sites in 亚历山德里亚. It is 27 meters long and was built in 292 AD during the reign of the Governor of Alexandria Postumus.
Pompey Pillar was called with this name due to an incorrect belief, as when General Pompey fled from Julius Caesar to Egypt, Ptolemy XII killed him and placed his head on top of the pillar, but this is not true.
While the Arabs called it the masts Pillar because it resembles the masts of ships.
The reason for establishing this column is to honor the Roman Emperor Diocletian because when a famine occurred in Alexandria, he came himself, exempted the city from taxes, and gave them a port of the wheat that Egypt sends to Rome.
The Pillar consists of 3 parts
The 1st part, which is the base and engraved with the names of the ancient Egyptian kings, and this means reusing the stone.
The 2nd part is the column body, which is cylindrical in shape, made of red granite.
The 3rd part is the crown of the column, which is Corinthian in shape.
Next to the Pillar, there are two statues of the Sphinx. As well as what was discovered in the Serapeum. This Serapeum is dedicated to the god Serapis, the god of Alexandria.
