It is located in Tahrir Square in Cairo. In 1902, it was built to house the antiquities of Ancient Egypt, as it is considered as the greatest collection of Ancient Egyptian history in the whole world.
The Egyptian Museum saves over 120,000 artifacts. The museum’s exhibits span from the beginning of the prehistoric period of Ancient Egypt (approximately 2700 BC) through the Greco-Roman period. Some of the masterpieces of the museum are Thuya and Yuya treasures, King Khafre or Chephren which is made out of Diorite.
The building consists of two floors. On the ground floor, you can follow the ancient Egyptian history from prehistoric up through the Greco-Roman period by turning left at the entrance and looping around the museum. The collection on the ground floor is exhibited in the chronological display
On the ground floor, you can see the collection from prehistory, Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom.As a part of the Old Kingdom, there is that statue of King Khafre which is made out of Diorite
. It is put on display in the second half of the ground floor of the museum. The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities also houses a huge collection of small statues of servants carrying out their everyday dusties and representation as a representation of everyday life at that time
The Middle Kingdom section contains some remarkable statues for King Mentuhotep II of the 11th dynasty and King Senusret III of the 12th dynasty.
The New Kingdom section contains some master pieces for Kings and Queens as King Thutmose III and Queen Hatshepsut of the 18th danasty and King Ramses II of the19th danasty
Upstairs the museum collections are displayed thematically with a large portion of the area taken up the exhibit of the contents of Thuya and Yuya treasures, including their mummies. Also upstairs, there is a hall dedicated to the fabulous jewelry discovered in the Royal Tombs of Tanis.
Despite most the Egyptian Museum collections are transferred to the Grand Egyptian Museum (the GEM) and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), it will remain the major spot for the ancient Egyptian heritage, as its collection is growing through cascading archaeological discoveries.
