Taba is a small city located at the top of the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea coast, 240 km north of Sharm El Sheikh. It distinguishes by its strategic location on the borders with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Palestine.
The history of Taba City:
Taba City is a valuable piece of Egyptian land and has a great history. This history began in 1892 during the period of Khedive Abbas Helmy II when the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II wanted to reduce the domination of England in Egypt. So he announced a firman preventing Egypt from controlling beaches on the Gulf of Aqaba, but the Ottoman Sultan canceled this firman and gave Egypt the eastern borders, from Rafah in the north to Taba in the south.
After that, the British authorities decided to accurately delineate Egypt’s borders. These borders included Taba and its beaches. In 1922, England announced that Egypt was an independent country and its borders included Taba.
Then in 1965, the tripartite aggression (England, France, and Israel) took place against Egypt,that Egypt defeated them. A peace treaty was signed between Egypt and Israel under the supervision of the United Nations. This treaty ensured that Taba is within the Egyptian borders.
Then in 1967, Israel occupied Sinai, including Taba. But after Egypt’s victory in the 1973, Egypt restores dominance over a large part of Sinai.
In 1979, Egyptian President Anwar El- Sadat signed the Camp David Treaty, which stated that Israeli evacuation from the Sinai, including Taba. In 1982, Egypt took control of the entire Sinai, except Taba.
In 1989, Egypt regained its dominance of Taba after resorting to international arbitration. Since that time, Taba has become one of the tourist attractions in Egypt. The Egyptian government has made many investments there to build roads, infrastructure, houses, and hotels.
The most famous attractions in Taba:
Taba Museum: It contains 3 halls displaying 700 artifacts that present the lifestyle in South Sinai from ancient Egypt until now.
Salah al-Din Castle: It is located 10 km from the Gulf of Aqaba. It was built by Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi in 1711 AD to protect Egypt from the attacks of the Crusaders.
