The mosque of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi or al-Mursi Abu al-Abbas, as the people of Alexandria are saying. It is located in the Anfoushi neighborhood in Alexandria. It is one of the most famous Islamic religious destinations in Alexandria and Egypt.
Who is Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi?
He is a Sufi religious scientist and nicknamed with Al-Mursi because he was born in Murcia, Andalusi, in 616 AH _ 1219 AD and died in 656 AH / 1258 AD.
In his youth, he went with his parents to the Hajj in Saudi Arabia, but unfortunately, their ship stumbled. He was survived near the shores of Tunisia.
In Tunisia, he met Sheikh Abu Al-Hassan Al-Shazly, became one of his students, and married his daughter. Then, he moved to Alexandria with his wife, where he settled for 43 years and became the Sheikh of Tariqah Shadhili.
The description of the mosque design:
The mosque was not built during Abu al-Abbas’s life but two years after his death. The mosque was founded on a land area of 3,000 square meters. Its design was influenced by Arab and Andalusian architecture.
The design of the mosque appears with four domes, a high minaret, columns taking the form of arches and made of granite, and a distinctive roof of arabesques.
The restoration work continued in the mosque until King Fouad I ordered to construct a large square in Anfoushi. This square would include the Abu Abbas Mosque, the Sheikh Yaqout Mosque, and the Imam Al-Abusiri Mosque. The Italian engineer Mario Rossi supervised the renovation of the mosque.
The importance of this mosque:
There is an annual feast of Abu al-Abbas is held in Alexandria on July 5. This festival includes many activities, such as the recitation of religious songs by Sheikh Al-Tohamy.
