The city of Abydos is located on the western bank of the Nile, north of Luxor. It is considered one of the most important ancient Egyptian cities because the ancient Egyptians believed that the god Osiris, the god of the dead, was buried there, so the ancient Egyptians were keen to visit Abydos as a pilgrimage destination and wished to be buried there.
Indeed, kings of the 1st and 2nd dynasties were buried there. Also, many ancient Egyptian kings were built temples there. One of the most important of these temples is the temple of King Seti I.
King Seti I built this temple during the 19th Dynasty, but he died before completing the construction of the temple, but his son and successor, King Ramses II, completed it.
The temple begins with a facade consisting of 12 huge square columns. This gate leads to the hypostyle built by King Ramses II. The inscriptions of this hall are for King Ramses II making offerings to the gods.
To the west, we find the 2nd hypostyle built by King Seti I. The depictions of this hall are for King Seti I making offerings to God Osiris and the god Horus.
This hall leads to 7 chapels built by King Seti I for 7 gods Osiris, Isis, Horus, Amun-Ra, Ra-Hor Akhti, Ptah, and Seti I as a sacred king. It was believed that these shrines contain sacred boats of these gods, and the shrine of the god Osiris has an inscription for the Gad sign (Osiris column).
To the left of the 2nd hypostyle, there are 2 entrances. One of them leads to the Hall of Sucre( God of death)and Nefertum (The god of perfume), while another entrance leads to a hall with a scene of one of the most important scenes of the temple, which is a list including the names of 76 of the kings of ancient Egypt, starting from King Menes to King Seti I. It is called Abydos King List.
