Saqqara Necropolis is located 40 km southwest of Cairo. It is a very important part of Memphis Necropolis, and it is one of the most important cities in ancient Egyptian history. Maybe the name Saqqara is derived from the name of the god Sokar (God of death) of this region.
Saqqara area is considered as an open museum that displays periods of ancient Egyptian history. Therefore, Saqqara is one of the most important Egyptian sites, as there are still many undiscovered antiquities inside its land.

King Djoser Complex and The step pyramid
This complex is considered the first stone building in the ancient Egyptian civilization. The history of this complex dates back to the period of King Djoser, the third dynasty, Old Kingdom. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser is the first pyramid in the ancient Egyptian civilization. This complex was designed by the vizier Imhotep.
King Unas pyramid
Unas is the last king of the Fifth dynasty. This pyramid is located southwest of the pyramid of King Djoser. The pyramid distinguishes with recording on its walls the pyramids texts, which are religious texts aimed to protect the deceased in the other world. These texts were written in hieroglyphs with a blue background.
King Teti pyramid
King Teti is the first king of the Sixth Dynasty. This pyramid is located to the northeast of the pyramid of King Djoser. This pyramid is characterized by the presence of well-preserved pyramids texts written on its walls.
Horemhep Tomb
Horemhep built this tomb when he was army chief, but when he became the king of Egypt, he left this tomb and built his royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor.
Mereruka tomb
Mereruka was a vizier during the reigns of the two kings Teti (2345-2323 BC) and Pepi I (2321-2287 BC), during the 6th dynasty. He was the husband of the daughter of King Teti. His tomb is located north of the pyramid of King Teti. It consists of 30 rooms. It is characterized by its wonderful depictions, such as hunting scenes in the bushes, and has a unique view, which is a presenting of the three seasons of the year in the ancient Egyptian calendar.
Kagemni tomb
Kagemni was a vizier and judge in the period of King Teti, the 6th dynasty. His tomb is located northeast of the pyramid of King Djoser. It was discovered in 1843 AD. The tomb is characterized by the beauty of its depictions, such as hunting scenes.
Serapeum of the sacred calf Apis
Serapeum is the tomb of the sacred calf of the god Ptah.
In recent years, many amazing discoveries have occurred in Saqqara site.
In November 2019, the discovery of Wahty’s tomb was announced.
On October 3, 2020, it was announced that 60 sarcophagi had been discovered, holding all their colors and inscriptions. These coffins were transferred to several Egyptian museums as the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
