Minya is considered one of the most important cities in Upper Egypt. It is located halfway between the north and south of Egypt, 246 km from Cairo. It includes many archaeological sites dating back to ancient Egyptian history, Coptic and Islamic monuments.
Minya was the capital of ancient Egypt during the period of King Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten), the 18th dynasty, New Kingdom. It was called Akhetaten, where they worshiped the god Atun. Now, this place is named Tell el-Amarna.
In the Coptic period, the Church of our Lady of the Virgin was built in Minya.
During the Islamic period, a large number of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (May God bless him and grant him peace) visited Minya. They were buried there, that is why Minya is called the Baqi’ of Egypt.
