Gayer Anderson Museum is one of the most important tourist attractions in Islamic Cairo. It is one of the best examples of Islamic architecture. Gayer Anderson Museum is located beside Ahmed Ibn Tulun Mosque.
Gayer Anderson Museum consists of two houses:
- The first house is located in the east. It was founded by Hajj Mohammed al-Jazzar in 1632 AD. Later, it was bought by a lady from the island of Crete, so it was called the Kritliyya House.
- The second house is located in the west. It was built in 1540 AD and called the house of Amna bint Salim.
These two houses were linked together by a bridge.
Who is Gayer Anderson?
Robert Gayer Anderson is a doctor in the British Army and specialized in gynecologists and obstetricians. He decided to stay in Egypt, so he bought this house in 1935 AD. After his death, the house was turned into a museum that displays the Gayer Anderson collections, as he was a collector of antiques.

Gayer Anderson Museum characterizes with existing a fountain of water for the public for drinking. This is unique as it is difficult to find something like that inside houses.
This fountain is located in the right part of the ground floor. This room has a window open to the street, as the servant of the fountain gave people water from this window. The fountain room is distinguished by the presence of beautiful geometric decorations.
The open courtyard of the house is characterized by the presence of a white marble fountain. The open courtyard is located in the middle and overlooking all sections of the house.
In the back of the house there is a stable for horses.
For the second floor, you will take the stairs. On the second floor, there is a hall called the Maqead.
It distinguishes with its ceiling decorated with floral and geometric decorations.
Also, there is a room dedicated as a gallery to displaying the oil paintings and drawings collected by Gayer Anderson.
In the museum room, we find the ancient Egyptian collection.
From the roof of the house, you will be amazed with seeing a fabulous view of Ahmed Ibn Tulun Mosque.
